I had my first class with Intermediate II today. I came early and started to prepare the things I was going to use for the class. When the teacher came I started the class by greeting the students and introducing myself. As warm up activity, we listened to a song called "I never gonna leave this bed" by Maroon Five. This song introduced the topic "prhasal verbs", after that I explained the grammar part; to be sincere I felt a little bit nervious in that moment, because I was thinking that maybe the topic was too difficult, but thank God the Ss understood the topic very well. I focused on inseparable prhasal verbs and I taught just nine to avoid to give the Ss a lot of information. Then I gave them a sheet of paper with multiple choice exercises related with the prhasal verbs we had studied before; after that they worked in pairs and made sentences using some phrasal verbs. At the end they were going to work in groups and write a short story using the phrasal verbs, but unfortunately time was not enough. I took a lot of time in the grammar explanation; that is why, I could not finish my lesson, but I will be more careful next time.
I really like this group, they are kind and although they are shy, they try to participate. I like their attitud, they are eager to learn, and although I took a lot minutes when I explained the grammar, they were paying attention all the time.

Hello Almix, i know to manage the time is a big issue and we will get to manage it while we practice the most. So try to set the time per each activity you have and try to respect the limit you have settled. I know that group participate a lot so bring activities for them to speak.

Hi, Almita!! I think it is normal to feel a little nervous when we are going to start teaching a new group, and when we are nervous is difficult to manage the time. I already taught that group and they are nice, they work very well, and the teacher is very flexible! I know everything is going to be ok with this group they are going to learn a lot with you!!
ResponderEliminarvery good Almi, keep on working hard! Blessings!! :)
Hello Alma!
ResponderEliminarI just want to add that something that really works to finish on time is to keep track.of the time & to let your Ss know how much time they have. You tell them for instance: ok you are going to solve these exercises, you have 7 min. because if you wait until the last S finish you will face a lack of time in the end.
Cheets!
Hello Alma!!!
ResponderEliminarI guess you are not the only one who faced some difficult situations, time sometimes passes too fast and it did not allow us to finish what we have prepared for the class, but at the end the results were good because even when you did not finish your lesson your students understood your topic.
Hello Alma! I like the beginning of the session. It was a pretty good idea to start the class with that song . I taught the same topic; nevertheless, I did it very differently in comparisson with yours. Might be that each of us has a different teaching style and ideas.Furthermore, I taught separable, transitional separable nonseparable, and obligatory separable phrasal verbs in a very general form; basically it was just practice. I put them to work in pairs. Some of the activities I developed were matching, fill-in-the-blank, and also a listening activity using the book. Again, good way to introduced the class Alma. Well done!!
ResponderEliminarHello almita.
ResponderEliminarI agree with your idea of not giving the students a lot of information. I consider this important because we have only 50 minutes to explain a content. In spanish there's a quote "el que mucho abarca poco aprieta" (dont know the translation), I prefer to have my students learning few things well understood, than giving them more information which they are not able to process. I guess the story will be different if we had more time with the groups.
Anyways, nice idea of starting the class with a song!!...
As we are practicing more, the experience will come.
nice class almix
Hi Soul!!! I know what you mean when make reference to "the grammatical part" such a challenge isn´t it? I agree with you that we MUST feel nervousness when facing it, and it is not because we don´t know the explanation, it is just the fact that we are in front of others what makes us doubt and at the end we realize that we knew it!! So, my dear, I´m so happy that you did it nice a clap for you!!!
ResponderEliminarAlmita!!
ResponderEliminarCongrats because you did a really nice job! I especially liked the song, we all liked it, because it was nice and it had many phrasal verbs, it was perfect for the target grammar. Despite of the fact that you took more time that it was supposed for the grammar part, your explanation was clear and accurate that’s why ss were interested and paying attention on it. I like your class in general, and I totally understand that time flies in the morning! I also couldn’t developed all the activities that I had planned, I omitted the role-play, remember? I think that measuring the time accurately for every activity is one of the thing that we must learn, but it is also one of the things that it is learn through the experience, and even though with every group will be different because every group works at a different pace according to their ages, English level and many other factors. Thus, measuring the time appropriately for every activity is one of the things that we will learn “along the way.”
